BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT
A little preparation makes your session smoother and safer.
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning on the treatment area for at least two weeks before your appointment
- If you have been sun tanning, spray tanning, or using self tanner on the treatment area, your tan needs to fully fade before we can treat you safely, this typically takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on how deep the tan is. Treating tanned skin increases the risk of burns and permanent pigment changes, because the laser can't tell the difference between your tan and the tattoo ink
- If you're unsure whether your skin has faded enough, email us a photo before your appointment and we will let you know, or we may ask you to rebook a couple of weeks out
- Avoid alcohol and blood thinning medication for 24 hours beforehand where medically appropriate
- Arrive with clean skin, free of lotion, makeup, or self tanner on the treatment area

Proper aftercare is what determines whether your skin heals cleanly and your tattoo fades predictably. Please read this in full before your first session, and follow it closely after every treatment.
What is normal after your session
Every one of these reactions is a normal part of your skin processing the treatment, not a sign that something has gone wrong.
- Redness and swelling in and around the treated area
- Bruising or pinpoint areas of light bleeding, this is common and varies depending on your skin and the tattoo's location
- Small blisters may appear within the first 24 to 48 hours, this is part of the healing response and does not mean the treatment was done incorrectly
- A temporary whitening or frosting of the skin immediately after treatment, this fades within a few hours

The first 48 hours
- Apply aloe vera gel to the treated area to cool the skin and support healing
- Use an ice pack, wrapped in a clean cloth rather than placed directly on the skin, to reduce heat and swelling
- Drink plenty of water and keep the area well hydrated
- Avoid all sun exposure on the treated area, this means covering it completely or staying out of direct sunlight, not just applying sunscreen
- Keep pets away from the treated area and do not let them lick it, this is a genuine infection risk that is easy to overlook
Removing your dressing
If we have applied gauze or a dressing to protect the area from friction against clothing, do not simply peel it off. Wet the dressing thoroughly first, so it lifts away cleanly without pulling at the healing skin underneath. Removing a dry dressing can tear delicate skin and increase the risk of scarring.
Days 3 to 14
- Keep the area clean and dry outside of your aloe vera application, gently washing with a mild, fragrance free soap if needed
- Do not pick, scratch, or pop any blisters or scabs, let them fall away naturally on their own. Picking at healing skin is one of the most common causes of scarring and pigment loss after laser treatment
- Avoid swimming pools, spas, saunas, and baths until the area is fully healed, stick to short showers instead
- Avoid exercise or activity that causes heavy sweating directly on the treated area for the first few days
- Continue strict sun protection on the area for at least 4 weeks after your session, new skin is especially vulnerable to sun damage and pigment changes during this time
When to contact us or seek medical care
Mild redness, swelling, and bruising are expected and normally settle within a week or two. Contact us, or see a doctor if needed, if you notice any of the following.
- Pain that gets worse after the first few days rather than improving
- Pus, discharge, or a foul smell from the treated area
- Spreading redness or heat beyond the immediate treated area
- Fever
